Twitter

Probably a good time to talk about Twitter as my phone is continually going off with texts from all of my lazy-ass friends who aren't working, whilst the facists at work have it blocked under the topic of instant messaging. Please, if you want to limit websites and increase productivity block all of the NRL Tipping sites (as I delete my 10th email requesting me to join one).

I have to say that my initial reaction to twitter was well that was pointless. I was first introduced to it at the Microsoft Mix on Campus thing back in December 07. Again I was kinda like, well, yeah that is kinda fun but pointless.

I also didn't setup my phone number which is where the whole point of twitter becomes apparent. I thought that twitter was going to rip me off with some form of dodgy text messages, thankfully it didn't.

It is with the phone interface side that twitter comes into its own as a tool for communication. Previously if I wanted to gain someone's attention from uni I would wait for them to come online rather than text them. This was because its so easy to fall into a text-based conversation and the cost soon adds up. With twitter, the face that its free texting is one of its great appeals to me. So now I am getting several messages a day from friends with various messages, the majority of which are jokey updates, but several of which are updates on how the various members are going on the projects we are working on.

I am going to get several of my friends, especially those overseas, to join twitter so that I am able to send them text messages as I think of things that interest them. The ubiquity of the mobile phone means that this will be easy to do and they will receive them instantaneously rather than having to logon to a pc to receive them.
